That makes him not only frightening because of his behaviors but also because his attacks could cause you to lose your job which is close to destroying your life, in some cases. Why would someone become a bully and what character traits are obvious in a bully.

A bully perceives himself as being strong. If he targets you as his victim, he sees you as being weak. That is simply the bottom line of how bullies operate. The bullying that such a self professing strong person will do is to begin to treat you harshly as if you were sub human and not even on the level of a pet. The harshness continues and escalates. You cease to become a person and are glared at scornfully as if your presence in their august space is a highly mortifying situation for them to have to live with.
